The Problem

A medium-sized company which manufactures large storage tanks and other products in the utilities and environmental sectors had, over the previous 2-3 years, experienced difficulty in organising the business and focusing key people to maximise their potential and deliver significant growth.

Turnover of staff was high and, without a coherent structure, plan and focused senior management team, the MD, the son of the retiring founder, was struggling to keep on top of the operation. He was also the top salesman.

The Approach

VtP carried out an organisational health check and looked at the relative roles of the board and the top management team ( see VtP Services ‘Business and Management Development’). We assessed the attitudes, motivation and talents of the top team and [the] other key personnel throughout the business, to identify individual and company strengths that could be utilised to grow and develop the business ( see VtP Services ‘Talent Development’).

The first step was to strengthen the Board, including finding a new chairman whose track record and natural talent was in growing successful businesses.

Working with all the managers and key staff ( see VtP Services ‘Change Management’), VtP then helped the company to introduce a new management structure and began to recruit (see VtP Services ‘Talent-fit Recruitment’) the missing personnel to form a progressive, senior management team, reallocating duties across these senior managers according to their natural talents and expertise.

A new Sales Director and a new Production Director were recruited as well as developing a new Motivational Plan with the Corporate Services Director that would maximise productivity throughout the workforce by engaging all employees ( see VtP Services ‘Employee Engagement and Motivation’).

More systematic and structured performance review procedures further added to management's sense of worth and direction, as well as giving new impetus to all employees to contribute to the future growth of the company.

The Outcome

The result has been annual year on year sales and profitability growth of over 25%.
